MFM tester Georgina found this crib very easy to build and the instructions were simple, resulting in a quick and easy build. It folds into an extremely compact size and comes with a convenient travel bag.

Easy to put together

Bedside cribs are generally easy to set up, and are usually on the smaller side, so they fit neatly alongside your bed. They are also lighter, making them more transportable. Georgina one of our MFM home testers, praised the Maxi-Cosi for being "super easy to build, with clear instructions and easy zips." The crib can also function as a travel cot, and comes with a handy bag for when you're traveling. It has multiple mesh windows to allow for airflow, and the adjustable height ensures it will fit any mattress.

Some cribs with a bedside cots for newborns have a side panel that can be adjusted to lower, allowing you an easy access to your baby without having to get out of bed. This is a great option for mothers who are breastfeeding or for those who wish to remain close to their infant throughout the night but don't want to risk co-sleeping.

It's an ideal option for a mother recovering from a c-section because you can easily pull baby to your side to feed them or make nappy changes without needing to get out of bed. The most comfortable cribs come with mesh sides that you can see your newborn through.

Some cribs lower the barrier completely, offering the comfort of sleeping with your partner without the associated risks (check that your chosen model is compliant with the latest safety standards however). Others allow you to keep the barrier lowered but pop it back up after you've lifted baby out of the crib, which is ideal for parents who have an apprehension of their baby falling off the side of their mattress.

There's also an integrated set-up for reflux as well as an swivel that can be 360 degrees to allow you to rotate the crib in accordance with the preferred position of your baby.

Georgina who took part in the MFM test was able to put it together quickly and without needing to consult any instructions. It's also a good travel cot, folding down flat and slipping into a handy bag.

The Next2me Magic, shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, has a larger size but is still small and easy to connect to your bed. Georgina found it straightforward to put together, however she was not convinced that the zips could have been better explained on the instruction sheet.

Easy to clean

Look for cribs that come with removable mattress covers which can be washed in the machine while looking at bedside cribs or travel cots. That will help you keep it free of leaky nappies, infant sick and drips. It's important to select a model that can be disassembled and partially dismantled, so you can get into all the corners and crevices to conduct a thorough cleaning and sanitising session.

This is important, as it's the best way to be sure that all germs and dirt have been cleared away. Check that the sides of the crib are securely attached so that your baby cannot fall off or be trapped.
