Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The blue-and gold macaw is an incredibly beautiful bird. Its stunning appearance is well-known. Its social nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It is also very good in socializing and quickly master new words and tricks.

Lolita's Personality

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a fun pet, they are also great pets for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can make ear-shattering calls and screeches which could be disruptive to those living in apartments or condos.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is determined the breeding process can begin.

Lolita's Care

For years, activists have been pleading for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative and plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds price of blue macaw times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and bond with their family members until death. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even reconnect with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the whale, which died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
