In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, vowed to work on an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita's Diet
