How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A robot vacuum can help you save time and effort in the case of regular cleaning. The top models do a great job at removing dust and light debris, and most allow you to designate no-go zones in pets or power cords.

The more expensive models even clean your floors, though they aren't able to climb stairs. Look for models with intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

The best robots we tried were efficient, easy-to-use and able to keep up with daily debris. You'll want a robot with decent carpet-picking capability and the capability to climb stairs. And, if you're looking for extra features, you may be interested in a robot that uses smart mapping technology, or an application that allows you to control the robot remotely.

She's a huge fan of robot vacuums that provide the greatest convenience, including self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and refill water tanks for mopping robots. She also likes robots that recognize landmarks such as furniture legs and power cables so that they won't trip up when climbing steps.

The Black and Decker model has a lower navigation score and has less object-avoidance technology than the top-rated models. However, it has a large dustbin that doesn't require frequent emptying, and has a long battery life. Additionally, it has an option that allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and return to the location where it last stopped, making it easier to tackle larger homes. This model is also a good choice for pet owners because it is able to identify and prevent tangled hair as well as fallen food particles.

In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined with a LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify rooms and obstacles with a structured-light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. The combination lets it avoid stairs, droplets of liquid and furniture legs with ease and save up to four floor maps to be used in the future for reference. It can also pause the cleaning process at any time and return to where it stopped so that you can complete chores while the robot is working. The included app provides an interactive 3D model of your home, room labels and more advanced cleaning options.

The robot isn't as good at cleaning like our top models, however it is a pro at picking up heavier items like orzo pasta, metal screws and even fine particles like sand. The only downside is that it's not able to mop, and has a less impressive navigation system.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting in your home, search for a robot vacuum with strong pickup and maneuverability scores on carpets and rug. Many models are good at picking up dust in low-pile rugs. Some are capable of picking up heavier debris, such as orzo pasta and screws made of metal. They can't take in fine particles like an upright canister, and could miss dirt close to baseboards or thresholds.

The best option for carpeted homes is a two-in-one robot vacuum and mop that allows you to swap between a cleaning bin and a damp mopping pad. The Roborock Q Revo, for example, is a vacuum cleaner and mops wet with circular pads that spin at a rate of 200 rotations per minute. It detects and raises the pads when it is in contact with carpet to avoid wetting the floor, and you don't have to take them off or replace them after every use. The Q Revo also performs better than other robot vacuums and mops in avoiding obstacles and getting closer to carpets and thresholds.

The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another good option. It did well in our tests, and you can schedule it to tidy your home even when you're away. It can be set to only mop. We were impressed by its ability to navigate on floors that are not bare as well as carpets. The Combo i5 has a long runtime and excellent path planning for an item of this size.

If you're looking for a high-tech vacuum that is high-tech, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a great option. It has a huge charging dock that can go months without needing to be emptying and has amazing navigation abilities and auto-emptying on both carpets and floors that are not cleaned. It also comes with a smart mapping system, and can be set to only run for certain hours (a beneficial feature to keep pets and children who are prone to mischief from running amok). The Shark has less suction power than some other robot vacuum/mop combos, but its still very effective in removing hair and pet hair. It is the most affordable of our top choices.

Best for Hard Floors

Robot vacuums are a great pick for hardwood floors because they are able to easily maneuver around obstacles without damaging bare surfaces. They are excellent at of picking up crumbs and dust, but they struggle with pet hair and other large debris. They don't have the suction power of a high-end upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not the best choice for carpeted rooms or upholstery that requires deep cleaning.

The most effective robots come with two-in-one features, combining mop and vacuum to complete the task in one move. Find models that have an onboard sensor that detects changes in the floor texture and adjust suction in line with the changes. This feature is available on the ECOVACS Deebot T9+ and allows it to effortlessly switch from hard carpeting to soft carpeting.

If your home is composed of hardwood floors, consider an automated vacuum and mop combo like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model features a powerful robotic vacuum that has smart navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces, and it has the ability to mop as well. Its sensors allow it to avoid hazards such as stairs.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to clean hardwood floors by applying downward pressure, not simply swab them to remove dirt and dust. The mop pads are reusable, which reduce waste, reduce the spread of germs and can be cleaned in the docking station, saving your time. The mops can also be washed, dried and reused.

The robovac can be controlled by your smartphone, making it easier to use. For instance, you can use the app to set up an area where the vacuum can't go, label separate rooms, or schedule cleaning sessions for specific areas. The eufy S1 Pro has an auto-emptying port that collects debris through trapdoors, and then stores it in a bagless or disposable bin. This means you don't have to empty the bin manually as often as you do with other models.

These robots are specifically designed for smaller spaces. They have smaller bins which can hold less debris. They are also more efficient in moving around corners more efficiently as opposed to larger models. They can also be placed under furniture where larger robots have difficulty reaching. They are generally less expensive than the pricier picks, as well, but you'll have to empty their dirt bins at end of each cleaning session.

A couple of years ago, robotic vacuum cleaner reviews vacuums underwent a major transformation as manufacturers began adding sensors to help navigate around and avoid household objects that their traditional sensors would become stuck on or over. The cheapest models still struggle with the same issues that the older ones did, and many of them need a certain amount of light to be able to see where they're going. Look into a model that uses a spinning LIDAR device that is mounted on top robot vacuum to map the space. Our top overall model and the runners-up use this. This lets them work in darkness and avoid obstacles like stairs.

In addition being capable of working in the dark, these models can be programmed to use their cliff sensors only on or near the floor, not when they're above them. It is still recommended to shield any mirrors that could interfere with this function, though, as the laser used by a LIDAR-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces and cause the robot to think it is in another room.

Some of the models we recommend also let you set up virtual no-go zones in areas you do not want the robot to go, which is useful if you have pets or children.
