The cue is a tapered rod of polished wood or synthetic material, ranging in length from about 40 to 60 inches (100 to 150 cm). Breaks of 100 points or more are referred to as a century break, and are recorded over the career of a professional player. Games are shorter, balls are more likely to be hit harder, and 'jump' shots are more likely to be witnessed, where a ball is played to deliberately jump off the ground and over another ball. Rack may also be used as a verb to describe the act of setting billiard balls in their starting positions (e.g. "to rack the balls"), or as a noun to describe a set of balls that are in their starting positions (e.g. "a rack of balls", more often called a pack or a pyramid in British English). The first ball must be placed at the apex position (front of the rack and so the center of that ball is directly over the table's foot spot). In both one-pocket and bank pool all fifteen object balls are racked entirely at random, with the center of the apex ball placed directly over the foot spot.

All points scored in the break before the foul was committed are awarded to the striker, but no points are scored for any ball pocketed during the foul shot. Straight pool is played to a specific number of points agreed on prior to the match's start, with each pocketed ball being worth one point to the shooter. After the initial rack, the balls are played until only the cue ball and one object ball remain on the table's surface. Penalty points are awarded to a player when a foul is committed by the opponent. When a foul is committed, the offender's turn ends and the referee announces the penalty. If, after a foul, the next player cannot cleanly strike both sides of the object ball, the referee may call a free ball, allowing the player to nominate any other ball in place of the object ball they might normally have played. 39 Another duty of the referee is to recognise and declare a stalemate when neither player is able to make any progress in the frame. Green and blue tend to be relaxing and soothing, brighter colors like red and orange tend to be more energetic, while darker colors and earth tones like maroon, grey, and tan make for a warm and tranquil atmosphere.

If the pool table is set in a social environment, like a home recreation room or pub, the color can influence interpersonal dynamics. Like association croquet, the object of the game is to be the first to pass each of their balls through all six hoops in both directions and to strike the central peg, for a total of 26 points. A maximum break in snooker is achieved by potting all reds with blacks, then potting all six colours, yielding 147 points; this is often known as a "147" or a "maximum". The game continues until every red ball has been potted and only the six colours and the cue ball are left on the table. All other balls are placed at random. However, all balls other than the 1 and 9 may be randomly placed. However, though various elements in the game of billiards have changed over the years, one thing remains the same - players need plenty of light if they’re going to make the most out of their experience. Traditionally, the 1 ball is placed on the rack’s right corner, and the 5 ball on the left corner from the racker's vantage point to maximize contrast between the corner balls and the background, as the 1 and 5 are the brightest colored balls, however, the world standardized rules do not require this.

If both players agree, the balls are returned to their starting positions and the frame is restarted (known as a "re-rack"), with the same player taking the break-off shot as before. This may derive from the fact that (unlike in golf) players will often attempt to move their opponents' balls to unfavourable positions. A rack (sometimes called a triangle) is a piece of equipment that is used to place billiard balls in their starting positions at the beginning of a pocket billiards game. 8-ball is one of the most popular billiards games, played with a total of 15 numbered balls and the 8-ball serving as the game-winning ball. The game continues until one of the players either pots the black ball to win the frame, what is billiards or commits a foul (losing the frame). Each segment of the string (bead) represents one point as the players can move one or several beads along the string.
