How to Replace an audi smart key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector audi Replacement Key (bookmark-rss.Com) bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is failing and requires replacement. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially if they're an Bosch sensor like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your car. It's an essential component of your programming audi key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. When this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a typical part across the audi replacement key 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
