Both robots excel at picking up surface debris on carpets and hard floors and they are very good at maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart maps of your home to assist the i3+ to navigate and clean up efficiently. The i3+ doesn't have obstacle avoidance capabilities like the i7+ or any other top-rated robots we test. It could get stuck on power cords or socks and have trouble moving between different surfaces, like carpet and hardwood.

iRobot suggests that you clean the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes putting away any toys or clutter it might come across. Also, keep the filters and dust bin free of dirt to prevent them from getting blocked. When the i3+'s internal bin is full or the battery is low, it returns to its docking station, automatically empties its trash into the station's external dustbin, and then continues cleaning where it left off. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for approximately an hour and a half of continuous use, and takes about three hours to fully recharge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model of the flagship line from iRobot and has the most up-to-date features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and the most important feature of all -- it comes with self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the main sources of maintenance for any budget robot vacuum vacuum.

The Roomba I7+ is able to make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also integrates with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and you can control your robot vacuum cleaner sale through the app or by voice.

The i7+ is quicker and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also removed large pet hair pieces from any surface including carpeting. The biggest benefit over the eufy, though it self-empties its dust bin which eliminates a major source of maintenance and reduces the amount of time spent cleaning.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning session and to move around the room, and even vacuum a specific space. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. When connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world filled with cordless vacs that look like minivans or buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like an old-fashioned sports car. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for many households, but it also fits nicely on the table for a coffee or shelves that you can spin around like an enchanted wand.

The V10 is powered with a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that can provide power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filtration system removes allergens, and then releases clean air back into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpets to trap large crumbs and fine dust. It has three suction modes that can be adjusted to the specific task. It is able to quickly change from handheld to floor vacuum, and vice versa.

This model has an attached dock that charges the Dyson to 100 percent within 3.5 hours. It also gives the ability to connect two attachments as well as a handheld. This is a significant improvement over older Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its sluggish run time. The claims of its marketing that it has up to 60 minutes of running time are not true, as CR's testing shows. This is a typical, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's run time. It's enough time to sweep a typical-sized home, but not enough to get into every corner. (A second pass is usually sufficient). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more mobile than previous Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeably superior on low-pile floor carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic robot vacuum that's a great choice for those who don't have a lot of money to invest in a best affordable robot vacuum. It was able to remove all kinds of debris and sizes in our tests, and frequently went over the same area several times to ensure an efficient clean. Its flat front end helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls, which is a nice touch.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it's not equipped with the ability to map that comes with more advanced models like our top selections such as the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. Because of this, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't in good condition, and often is power-depleted before making it back to its base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in all aspects, as it has fewer components that need regular cleaning and is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower costs for recurring maintenance, has more advanced automation capabilities and is more efficient in maneuvering itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba 694. It also has physical boundaries strips and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It's also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and can perform better on floors with bare or low-pile.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

In our testing, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors, and also handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, clearing up 86% of it. However, it did not do particularly well with taller objects like cords and socks, which was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested and this could be a deal breaker for some shoppers.

The app allows you to access the camera onboard of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's cleaning area. This feature allows you to monitor your children or pets when you're away. The dustbin and the filter can be cleaned to ensure a quick, painless clean-up. The app allows you to manually steer the robot when needed. My living room rug for example has a dark-colored border that can trip up some other robots.
