If you have carpeting, pick an automatic vacuum that scores high for rug and carpet ability to maneuver and pick up. Many models are good at collecting dust from low-pile rugs. Some do a decently job of sweeping up heavier debris like orzo pasta and metal screws. However, they can't handle small particles as well as canister or upright vacuums, and they may not pick up dirt that is ground-in close to baseboards and thresholds.

It can also be set to mop only and we were impressed by its impressive navigation on both bare floors and rugs and its ability to go up and over furniture. The Combo i5 also has a very long runtime and great path planning for such a small device.

If you're looking to buy a high-tech vacuum Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best Vacuum & Mop is a great option. It comes with a large dock that can last for weeks without needing to be empty. It also has amazing capability to auto-empty carpets and floors with no floor. It's also got an intelligent mapping system that can be programmed to be operational during certain times of the day (a handy feature for keeping children and pets who are prone to mischief from running it amuck). The Shark is less powerful than other robot vacuum/mop combinations, but it does pick hair and pet hair very well. It's also the highest value of our top choices.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are ideal for hardwood floors, as they can maneuver through obstacles with ease without causing damage bare surfaces. They are fantastic at picking up dust and crumbs, but struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They also lack the suction power of a top-of-the-line upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not the ideal option for rooms with carpets or upholstery that requires deep cleaning.

The most effective robots are those that come with two-in-one features, combining the power of a mop with a vacuum to complete the task in one go. If you have mixed flooring, look for a model equipped with an onboard sensor that detects any changes in floor texture and adjusts suction accordingly. This model has a powerful robotic vacuum equipped with smart navigation that can clean hardwood and other surfaces. It can also mop. Its sensors help it avoid staircases and other hazards, so you don't need to worry about the bot plummeting down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.

However, the new sensors haven't solved all of the problems these machines have. In addition to being able to work in the dark they can also be set to use their cliff sensors only close to or on the floor, not when they're above them. It's important to cover mirrors in order to stop this from happening.
