Category A1 Rules For Motorcyclists

The category a1 rules apply to those who want to operate small motorcycles. These motorcycles have a maximum cylinder power of 35kW. They cannot be derived directly from vehicles with more than twice their power.

The open drone operation category can be subdivided into three categories A1 to A3. You can fly drones that have class C0 or C1 as part of the A1 subcategory (fly over people) until January 2024.

A1

Category A1 is one of three drone categories that are subject to the control of EASA. It is available to aircraft that are up to a maximum takeoff weight (MTOM) that is 25 kilograms. It requires a flight schedule and a flight log as well as a remote identification system and a geoawareness system. The drone must also be within sight of the pilot at all at all times. A2 allows you to operate transitional drones which aren't CE marked, but which have been modified to lower the risk of collisions with people. It is only possible to fly these drones with A2 until the 2022 deadline, after which they'll be required to comply with the A3 regulations.

The A1 and A2 categories will allow you to become a safe and confident motorcyclist. The number of lessons you'll have to complete will depend on your ability and learning progress, but a predetermined number of special rides must be completed. A3

This category allows flights with drones that have a maximum take-off mass of up to 25 kg. While it is a lower risk operation, strict precautions must be taken to minimize potential incidents. This test is designed to test the remote pilot's knowledge of the operational and technical mitigations to reduce the risks of flying larger drones (class C2, below 4kg mass) close to people. The successful completion of this test is rewarded with a 'certificate of competence to fly in category A2'.

There are 'transitional arrangements' that allow legacy drones, which are not certified, to operate under the categories A1 or A2 for two years following the implementation of the new EU regulations. Legacy drones may not be flown over the heads of people and must be operated by an A2 CofC.

To operate drones in this category, you must pass the normal online flyer ID test, and then pass an additional test in the theory department. You must also declare that you have some practical understanding of your drone and submit a written declaration of competence. These requirements are similar to the driving licence model, where the person who is first granted the licence for a lower powerful vehicle category may be granted access to an upgrade to a higher category.

A4

The DOH is currently preparing detailed guidelines that will be used for category A4. These will be in line with other procedures and include information such as the number of dressing changes each day. These guidelines will be presented to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infections, (IATF-EID) as well as the DOH National Immunization Technical Advisory Group. The IATF EID and the DOH National Immunization Technical Advisory Group will review and approve these guidelines prior to their being finalized.
