Bedside cribs are a bassinet-style cot that fixes to the side of your bed. They typically come with a side that can be lowered down for easy reach and some come with an incline setting that's perfect for babies who have reflux.

MFM test subject Georgina said that this crib was simple to put together and the instructions were very clear. It was a simple build. It folds into an extremely compact size and comes with a convenient travel bag.

Easy to put together

They are compact and easy to set up, so they can be set close to your bed. They are also lighter, which makes them more portable. Georgina one of our MFM home testers, praised the Maxi-Cosi for being "super easy to construct with clear instructions and easy zips." This crib can also be used as a travel cot and comes with a convenient bag for when you're on the move. It has multiple mesh windows to allow for airflow and the adjustable height ensures it can fit on any mattress.

Some cribs with a bedside feature an additional side panel that can be adjusted to let you easily access your baby without getting out of bed. This is a great option for breastfeeding mothers or parents who want to be close to their baby throughout the night but don't want to risk co-sleeping (which is linked to a higher risk of SIDS).

Most models come with an integrated function that lets you to rock your baby. This can be extremely soothing for your baby, and help them fall asleep. The Graco Play Yard (also called as the pack and play) is a different favorite and was shortlisted in the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.

Cosy and comfortable

A bedside crib allows you to monitor your little one from the peace of your bed. It's the ideal solution for a new mum recovering from a c-section as you can easily lift baby up to you to feed them or make nappy changes without having to get up. The most comfortable cribs come with mesh sides that allow you to see your baby through.

Some cribs lower the barrier completely, giving you the convenience of co-sleeping without the associated risks (check whether the crib you're considering is compliant with the latest safety standards though). Some cribs let you keep the barrier lowered but pop it back up after you've lifted baby out, which is better for parents who have an apprehension of their little one rolling off the side of their mattress.

The Luah - which won the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket - is designed to be attached to bedsteads and divan beds, but does require straps that are longer than some other models (check the specifications to make sure your bed can accommodate). It's a roomy model with an opening side panel and an exclusive perforated base that creates an air cushion to boost air flow. There's also an integrated reflux setting as well as a 360-degree swivel to allow you to turn the crib according to the position your baby prefers.

If you're looking for something smaller in size, the Tutti Bambini CoZee is a different stylish option, with oak legs and smart fabrics that will fit your decor. It's also incredibly easy to put together. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was able to put it together quickly and without requiring any instructions. It's also a great travel cot that folds flat before slipping into a convenient bag.

The Next2me Magic, shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, has a larger size, yet it's compact and easy to attach to your bed. Georgina found it straightforward to put together, though she was not convinced that the zips could have been more clearly described on the instruction sheet.

Easy to clean

Find cribs with mattress covers that can be washed in the machine when looking at bedside cribs or travel cots. This will keep it clean and free of dribbles, leaky diapers, and spit-up. It's also a good idea to choose a product that is easily removed and partially dismantled so that you can access all the corners and crevices to conduct an extensive cleaning and sanitising.

This is vital, since it will ensure that all dirt and germs have been cleared away. It is also important to ensure that the sides of your crib are securely connected, ensuring there aren't any gaps or areas that your child could slide down or become trapped.

You'll also want to ensure that the crib is easy to clean and it fits with your bed. This is especially important if you're using a bedside crib for co-sleeping. Some cribs can also be converted into a travel cot or include additional features such as tilting, rocking (use with caution, be sure to speak to your GP about this) or changing into an older baby cot or playpen.
