How to Buy a Real Registered Driver's License

Over the decades the law enforcement community has tried a variety of methods to fight fake IDs. Holograms, water marks dual photos and bar-coding have been used but all of them can be defeated by sophisticated counterfeiters.

You'll need two evidences of New York State residency to get a REAL or Enhanced ID. Examples include your current driver's license or non-driver's ID, bank statement utility bill or pay stubs.

Real Documents Unit

The Real Documents Unit processes and renews licenses for people who are not eligible for the driver's ID card or non-driver identification cards due to medical issues. This process involves examining the medical records of a person and determining if they're safe to drive a vehicle. If not, the license of that person could be suspended or revoked.

If a doctor or nurse treating a patient write an assessment that shows that the patient is unable to safely drive, or does not intend to drive any longer, the patient is believed to be suffering from a medical condition. This report can then be used by the DMV to impose restrictions on the driver's license, or to suspend or revoke the driver's ability to drive.

You must provide authentic documents that prove your identity and address in order to obtain a driver's license that is registered. Those documents must be official and current. You can use the utility bill or bank statement to verify your current address. You can also use a copy of your Social Security Card to confirm your address and identity. A letter from your physician declaring that you are not able to drive or do not intend to drive is also acceptable.

Once your application has been completed, you can visit any Secretary State Driver Services facility for your photo and any exams required. After your documents have been reviewed and verified you will receive a new permanent standard ID card or DL card via mail within 15 working days.

Real Driver's Licenses

The Real Driver's Licenses are a new type of identification that is in compliance with the federal Real ID Act.
