Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop in the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would change our perception of avian intelligence. To teach Alex, Pepperberg and her assistants would enact scenarios involving the object they wanted him to learn about. This process is referred to as the rival model and has since evolved into a common method of teaching animals.

Alex was not just a dog with a high cognitive capacity, but also a playful friend who loved to play with his owners. He was often an advisor and cheerleader in the training sessions.
