Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only way to determine sex. Once the bird's sex is known the breeding process can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases, and tricks. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and realize that this is a challenging task. Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative in a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean, not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and wish to see her returned to the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction there for decades. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a vulnerable state.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current condition. It is not known what health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not obliged to disclose the information. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite these ongoing health concerns, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
