1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its sibling, the i3 EVO, are identical robots that differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying features. The i3+ is an excellent alternative for those who want a an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience but are willing to manually empty the dustbin of the robot once it gets full.

Both robots do well picking up surface debris off hard floors and carpets, and they are very good at maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home that assist the i3+ to navigate and clean efficiently. The i3+ isn't able to feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or other top-rated robots we have tested. It could be stuck on power cords or socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces, like rug and hardwood.

iRobot suggests that you clear areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, including putting away any toys or clutter it may encounter. It's also an excellent idea to keep the dustbin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. When the i3+'s internal bin is full or its battery is depleted it will return to its docking station, automatically empties its dirt into the station's dust bin, and then continues cleaning where it started. The i3+ EVO's battery can last for about an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes around three hours to recharge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the most powerful model in the iRobot flagship line, and it has the most up-to-date features. It's self-charging, self-navigating, and the most crucial feature of all -- it comes with an auto-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the main sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that lets it map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot using voice or via the app.

The i7+ is quicker and more maneuverable in our tests compared to the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from any surface, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self cleaning vacuum-emptying bin which eliminates major sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also amazed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning routines, move itself around the room, and even vacuum the area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. When connected we were able to communicate with the i7+ using voice commands such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans or buses, this small Dyson model feels like an old-fashioned sports car. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum in many households, but it also fits nicely on the coffee table or the bookshelf, where you can move it around like the magic wand.

The V10 is powered with a Lithium-ion battery with 7 cells of energy that can provide energy that lasts for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system traps allergens, then releases fresh air into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to drive deep into carpets and pick up large particles or fine dust. It has three suction modes that can be adjusted to the specific task. It can quickly change between handheld and floor vacuum, and vice versa.

This model also has a dock that charges to 100% in about 3.5 hours and provides an easy access to two attachments and the wand clip. This is a big improvement over earlier Dysons, which take a long time to charge and are a pain to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its sluggish run time. As CR's tests show, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are a bit misleading. This is an average not an extraordinary time for the battery-powered cordless vacuum. That's still enough run time to vacuum the majority of a typical-sized best home vacuum cleaner, but not quite long enough to clean every spot (though an additional run-through often can be effective). This doesn't mean that this model isn't a good choice: It's lighter and mobile than the older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is significantly superior on carpets with a low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

The 694 is a basic robot vacuum that's a great option for those who don't have lots of money to spend on a robot. It's capable of sucking up a variety of kinds of debris in our tests, and frequently goes over the same areas several times to get a really thorough clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach corners and edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to avoid obstacles and guide you through your home. However, it isn't equipped with the ability to map that is found in more advanced models, such as our top picks, i3+EVO and the j7+ Series. It may get stuck on phone cords or furniture and will often run out of power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694, as it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, has a lower costs for recurring expenses, is more sophisticated in its automation capabilities and is better able to maneuver itself. It also has a larger dustbin and can charge faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for most reasons, since it has a longer battery life, can change its suction power mode manually and comes with physical boundary strips, and is controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It also feels better-built and has a more powerful motor, and performs notably better on both bare floors and carpets with a low pile, as well as providing a greater variety of automation options.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a household name in home electronics. It's not surprising, then, that they are also among the top producers of robot vacuums and mop. Jet Bot AI+ has a cutting-edge onboard technology to navigate and avoid obstacles.

In our tests during our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and cleaned up 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It didn't do very well in avoiding taller items such as cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested, and this could be a deterrent for some buyers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed through the app. You can also set up a live streaming from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you to check in on your children or pets when you're away. The filter and the dust bin are washable to make cleanup quick and easy. The Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a clean station that self-empties, which helps keep the robot's trash bin clean and optimizes its suction power for each cleaning.

Unlike other robotic vacuums, which are designed for both hard floors and carpets, Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for hard floors. They also have two side sweepers to clean along edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also comes with AutoSense technology, which senses the presence of surface litter or embedded dirt and automatically adjusts its power level. The vacuum also has an app that allows you to view the virtual map, manage functions, and schedules. You can also monitor the status of the vacuum and then send it to its dock for charging with the click of a button. The app lets you modify the LEDs on the top of the vacuum to tell where it is focused or if it's stuck.

The app also makes it easy to steer the robot manually if needed. For instance my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that tends to cause confusion for other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL, however was able to continue to move across the border without ever registering the high point. Also, the ability to set up weekly cleaning schedules is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
